Welcome back to 2024!

 

I am looking forward to teaching the students Science at Belmont Primary. I will be working with the students on Wednesdays and Thursdays in the learning area of science from Years K to year 6. We will be in our science lab that was converted from a classroom to a lab in 2018-one of the first in the state of WA.

 

We use the Primary Connections program which is used in Australia to teach science and is aligned with the Australian and West Australian Curriculum. In first term we look at the understanding of Physical Science and complete investigations within the unit.

 

Room 1 - K/P - On the Move-Some of the activities the students will be working on will be looking at body parts that move, predict and observe things that move in classrooms and outside the classroom, observe moving toys, identify things that bounce, push, pull, slide, roll and spin, and investigate how far things roll on different surfaces.

 

Room 3 - 1/2 - Look and Listen-Some of the activities the students will be working on will be describing sources of light and sound, identify sources of sound and light in their environment, locate dark and light places at school, describe how vibrations produce sound, look at how sounds travel through air and solids, investigate why we need light to see and describe how sound and light travels for the source to the ear and the eye.

 

Room 4 - 3/4 - Heating Up -Some of the activities that the students will be working on will be brainstorming ways to keep warm, find sources and producers of heat in the classroom, look at ways heat can be produced, explain how heat transfers from hot objects to cooler ones and investigate the conduction of heat through different materials.

 

Room 7 - 5/6 - Light Shows- Some of the activities that the students will be working on will be describe how objects reflect light into our eyes allowing objects to be seen, draw a ray diagram to show how light travels, describe how a shadow is formed, use mirrors to reflect light in different directions, sort materials into opaque, translucent and transparent, observe refraction, and construct a periscope to see an object around a corner.
